“Without foundation there can be no fashion” Christian Dior
A designer that revolutionised fashion for women, we would never look the same again!
It seems surprising that a male designer would have such a great understanding of the female body and how cloth should be draped to compliment the form. But, perhaps a distance for the subject makes all the different to highlight its great features.
Let’s talk about the man himself. Christian Dior was born in 1905 in Granville near Normandy, France and graced the world of fashion with his presence until 1957. A French designer who started a fashion house, The House of Dior, in 1946 at the age of 31, with the support of Marcel Boussac.
It was an important time in fashion just after WWII. During the war men had been representing our country whilst women had swapped their cooking aprons for overalls to go to work. For the first time women has a sense of place in the world of work. They were doing men’s jobs to ensure the world kept ticking along. Then the war ended and men resumed work. Where did this leave women?
Women were at the hands of Dior. Somehow he captured our attention with the ‘New Look’. A style never seem before that created shape and silhouettes – underpinned by layers and layers of luscious fabrics, ‘the foundation’. He gave women a look that revealed their bust and waist, but was tasteful by covering up the legs. Women had found a new role of work, to look stylish and sophisticated.
In his time Dior dressed many famous women from Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn to Marilyn Monroe.
Dior fashion and accessories came be seen in many Museums such as: The Christian Dior Home and Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The V & A, Museum of London, Killerton House (National Trust), The Fashion Museum and Dents Museum.
Today the brand of Dior continues under the Christian Dior Couture division and has dressed many celebrities from Cameron Diaz, Natalie Portman to Carey Mulligan.
Dior has become a worldwide band gracing our presence with ready-to-wear fashion, leather bags, shoes, jewellery, fragrance and much more.
